Cybercrime, which is rapidly increasing in frequency and in severity, requires us to rethink how we should enforce our criminal laws. The current model of reactive, police-based enforcement, with its origins in real-world urbanization, does not and cannot protect society from criminals using computer technology. This article proposes a new model of distributed security that can supplement the traditional model and allow us to deal effectively with cybercrime. The new model employs criminal sanctions, primarily fines, to induce computer users and those who provide access to cyberspace to employ reasonable security measures as deterrents. We argue that criminal sanctions are preferable in this context to civil liability, and we suggest a system of administrative regulation backed by criminal sanctions that will provide the incentives necessary to create a workable deterrent to cybercrime./blockquotepIt’s from 2005, but I’ve never seen it before./pdiv class=feedflarea rel=nofollow target=_blank href=http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/schneier/fulltext?a=IU-UdCbMjD4:UndJjGo9QXE:2mJPEYqXBVIimg src=http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/schneier/fulltext?d=2mJPEYqXBVI border=0/aa rel=nofollow target=_blank href=http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/schneier/fulltext?a=IU-UdCbMjD4:UndJjGo9QXE:7Q72WNTAKBAimg src=http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/schneier/fulltext?d=7Q72WNTAKBA border=0/aa rel=nofollow target=_blank href=http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/schneier/fulltext?a=IU-UdCbMjD4:UndJjGo9QXE:dnMXMwOfBR0img src=http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/schneier/fulltext?d=dnMXMwOfBR0 border=0/a/div

Open Question: A virus, or something, is using my e-mail address to spam people. How do I make it stop?

Posted by Elderly Care Expert | Internet Security | Friday 31 July 2009 5:07 pm

A couple days ago a friend alerted me that e-mails, that I had not sent, were going out to everyone in my address book as if I had sent them. The e-mails have links at the bottom presumably to entice people to buy something though I have not checked these links. I have tried scanning with Norton Internet Security as well as several free-ware antivirus suites. None of them picked up anything, except a tracking cookie, so it doesn’t seem that that method will work.

I’m hoping someone out there can tell me how I can stop this from happening and also what the vulnerability might be for those who open one of these e-mails or worse click on a link. The only thing I thought of was to terminate my yahoo e-mail account but I haven’t been able to figure out how to do that either.

Please help if you can. My account is being used to spam friends, family, and colleagues and I’d hate to mess up their computers or accounts.

Open Question: Computer Security for windows?

Posted by Elderly Care Expert | Internet Security | Friday 31 July 2009 4:07 pm

I am interested in better security for my computer. I am currently running Peer Guardian 2 and Avg 8.5 incase any viruses get through. I am wondering what other free security is out there, preferably one that can be turned on and off easily and one that actually does something. I had other programs before but they seemed to never find anything, and it definately wasnt because i didnt have any viruses cause i scanned with avg and it found about 5.
